TechNow Rewind: Week 11, 2014

1. Android Wear announced. (March 18)
     The world's most popular smartphone operating system, Google Android added support for wearable devices like smartwatches with the release of the Android Wear SDK. In a nutshell, it is Google Now for wearable devices.  Learn more: Link 1 Link 2 Link 3

The Moto 360
2. Moto 360 announced (March 18)
    Along with the launch of Android Wear, Lenovo's Motorola unveiled the Moto 360, a smartwatch with a circular display, no I/O ports and a classy design. Motorola says "Moto 360 is everything you need, with a look that you want". We hope this is as good as they claim unlike the ill fated Motoactv.




3. Google announces it's partnership with LG for building Android Wear powered hardware (March 18)

   LG G Watch is not that far behind as it becomes one of the first few devices to feature the smartwatch OS by Google that aims to be a game changer in the ever growing smartwatch market. Working in close quarters for the development of LG G smartwatch with Google, LG says that the watch will be compatible with a wide range of Android powered smartphones.

4. A common charger for all your gadgets, an idea by the EU parliament.
   The EU Parliament voted on whether a universal charger for mobile devices should go in effect for countries within the European Union. The vote passed overwhelmingly with 550 votes for and only 12 against, and now needs to be approved by the European Council. If passed, member countries will have two years to make it part of respective national laws, and manufacturers three years to comply.

5. QHD display sporting Oppo Find 7 launched
    Managing set the bar high, Chinese electronics company, Oppo has just unwrapped the true successor of the Oppo Find 5 (the first phone with a 1080p display), the all new Oppo Find 7. The Find 7 is the second phone to sport a QHD display and we guess it will be the first phone with a QHD display to have a good international release. It rocks a 5.5" 1440p display with puts up a pixel density of 538ppi. It also sports the usual 2014 flagship bells and whistles, a Quallcomm Snapdragon 801, 3GB RAM, 13MP camera with 4k video capture etc. Note: a cheaper 1080p version with lower specs is also available

6. Apple quietly refreshes their budget offerings
     Apple quietly introduced the ill fated & overpriced iPhone 5c with 8GB for 429pounds (UK) and the iPad with Retina Display (4th gen iPad) with 8GB to replace the aging iPad 2.



7. Apple patents a new multitouch stylus design.
    Apple is working on a stylus with an extendable nib with multiple tips and a built in light sensor. The information comes from patent images secured by AppleInsiderThe nib on the stylus is flexible and can either work almost entirely from within the chassis of the stylus for drawing thin lines or be extended so as to deliver multiple touch zones like a paintbrush.
