TechNow: Google Glass Explorer rumored for a one-day expansion keeping the $1500 tag

Google Glass has been only available to participants in Google’s Glass Explorer program for over a year by now, but the path to getting your hands on Glass hasn’t been entirely straightforward. With consumer-oriented commercial sales not yet open, buying Glass first meant being chosen specifically by Google, though later we saw availability open up a little. While we’re still waiting for that day when Glass might be available for all, there’s new word that Google could be planning a special one-day sales event, making Glass available to anyone in the US who wants one.

A leaked memo reveals Google’s intent to announce a limited offer whereby anybody interested can place a Glass order without any waitlist or application process – just submit your order and you’re good to go. The timeframe isn’t nailed-down, but the memo mentions that having the promotion last for “about a day” is what Google’s thinking, with the announcement coming on April 15.

Pricing would still be the full and hefty $1500 (Rs. 90262.50), meaning that despite broader availability, we still aren’t quite to the point where we can start seeing Glass’s anticipated much lower commercial price tag. On the plus side, with the $1500 Glass will include a free frame or shade. Considering frames go for $225, that’s not an insignificant offer.
